# How we make money

> Affiliate disclosure in plain language: what is commercial, what it changes, and what it does not.

Some links on this site are commercial. If you sign up through one, we may receive a commission at no additional cost to you. That is how the research is funded.

## What commission does not buy

- It does not buy a score. Scores come from the rubric in [how we test](/how-we-test/).

- It does not buy a ranking or a place on a shortlist.

- It does not change a figure. Prices, pool sizes and performance numbers come from the sources cited on the page.

- It does not suppress a negative finding.

## How to spot a commercial link

Commercial links are marked `rel="sponsored"` in the page markup, which is the standard signal search engines and browser tools read. A disclosure box also appears on any page carrying one, or ranking a provider we have a relationship with. That box is generated automatically by the publishing system, so it cannot be left off by mistake.

## Providers we have no relationship with

We review and rank providers regardless of whether a commercial arrangement exists. A provider with no relationship is treated identically, and can and does outrank one that pays.

## Other income

We do not sell sponsored posts, paid reviews, guest posts, or link placements. If that ever changes, this page changes first and anything sponsored will be labelled as such on the page itself.

## Why we tell you this

Beyond it being the right thing to do, disclosure of a material connection is required by the US Federal Trade Commission under 16 CFR Part 255 and by comparable consumer-protection rules elsewhere. We would rather over-disclose than have you wonder.
